What a Gender-Free Hair Salon Means — and Why It Matters in Utah

A gender-free hair salon prices and books by the service you want, not by your gender. Here's what that looks like day to day at Lucero in Salt Lake City and Ogden.

What a Gender-Free Hair Salon Means — and Why It Matters in Utah

A gender-free hair salon sounds like a statement, but in practice it's a quieter thing: you book and pay by the work, not by a label. No "men's cut" and "women's cut" at two different prices for the same scissors. Just the service you actually want. For a lot of people in Utah, that small shift is the difference between dreading a haircut and looking forward to one.

Booked by what you want, not who you are

Traditional salon menus split everything by gender, which forces an awkward choice on anyone whose hair — or identity — doesn't fit the box. We built Lucero so a haircut never begins with a question about who you are. You choose a cut, color, fade, shave or system by what you want done, and the price reflects the time and skill it takes, nothing else.

A haircut should be booked by what you want done, not by a gender attached to it. — Joshua Lucero, founder

A genuinely safe, welcoming chair

Gender-free isn't only about the menu; it's about the room. As a queer-owned studio, we use the names and pronouns you give us, we don't make assumptions, and we work hard to make the chair a place you can relax in. That welcome extends to everyone who walks in — longtime clients, first-timers, and folks who've had hard experiences at other salons.

For the whole community

Our commitment shows up beyond the chair, too. Through the Gender Free Haircut Club, we offer free haircuts, plus supplies and clothing, to people who need a little light — no paperwork, no explanations. It's one of the things we're proudest of.

Quick answer: what does "gender-free salon" mean?

It means services are listed, booked and priced by the work itself — length, time and technique — instead of by the client's gender. Everyone chooses from the same menu, and everyone is welcome. Lucero is a gender-free, queer-owned studio in Salt Lake City and Ogden.
